Motorola is still working to compete in the high-end segment. This Friday (19), the brand launched its Edge 40 in Brazil, inaugurating another generation of the line in the domestic market. This time, it highlights the 50-megapixel camera, with 2.0 µm pixels and f/1.4 aperture, which should capture more light and improve the quality of photos.

In addition to the camera, the Motorola Edge 40 bets on design, continuing its partnership with Pantone to put fashionable colors on the devices. IP68 protection against water and dust is another novelty, and the 144 Hz screen, which had already appeared in previous models of the Edge line, reappears.
Let’s start with the point that Motorola highlights: the camera.
The main sensor of the Motorola Edge 40 has 50 megapixels, with 2 micrometer points and f / 1.4 aperture. According to Mauricio Moisés, global product manager in the camera sector, it is the largest lens opening ever adopted on a smartphone.
In fact, it ties with the Huawei Mate 50, which has a variable aperture between f/1.4 and f/4.0. It’s also worth noting that other devices have smaller pixels, but combine the dots to capture more light.

The main camera of the Motorola Edge 40 should be able to capture up to 40% more light. In addition to better images in dark situations, this should deliver a shallower depth of field — in other words, the background will be more blurred, giving it a more professional look.
Finally, clicks should be faster. As the aperture is larger, more light passes through, and the shutter has to work for less time, reducing blur and blur in the image.
Moses also explains that the smartphone features color calibration, which should please users more.
A differential of the camera is the ambient light sensor. This way, she doesn’t need to scan the image when the app is opened, and only then make the necessary adaptations. In practice, the promise is that it will be ready faster.

The secondary sensor is 13 megapixels and accumulates ultrawide, depth and macro functions. It also offers portrait option.
The bokeh effect, background blur, uses artificial intelligence to detect objects and blur the background.
The cinematic bokeh is within the video mode. For Motorola, this makes it easy for the user – the company considers that most consumers only use the main camera modes.
On the front side, the selfie camera is 32 megapixels. It has dual capture, to record the front and rear camera at the same time. In vlog mode, the video shows a small front camera window, and it only appears when the user is talking.
Pantone color of the year and IP68 protection
Edge 40 continues the infinity edge of previous generations. They have Edge Lights, lights that turn on when a notification arrives. The display is 6.55 inches and uses pOLED technology, with FullHD + resolution, 144 Hz refresh rate (already present in some Edge 30 family models) and HDR10 +.
The device has a synthetic material finish, which, according to the company, gives a special touch to the product. Another design aspect is Pantone’s choice of color of the year — in 2023, it’s Viva Magenta, which is almost a red. There are also black and green options.

A novelty of the line is the protection against water and dust in the IP68 standard. “IP68 has always been an aspect that we researched. The consumer considers this important, and the time has come for us to implement it”, comments Thiago Masuchette, product manager at Motorola.
The executive points out that the back of the device is a single piece, facilitating water resistance.
In the most technical part, the Edge 40 comes with a MediaTek Dimensity 8020 processor, 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256 GB of USF 3.1 storage.
The battery has 4,400 mAh, and the smartphone comes with a 68 W TurboPower charger in the box, which takes the phone from 0% to 50% battery in 15 minutes. 15W wireless charging is also supported.
Masuchette highlights the Ready For feature, which connects the cell phone to PCs and TVs. The smartphone can be used as a webcam in video calls.

In terms of updates and software, the Motorola Edge 40 already comes with Android 13. The promise is to provide two more versions of the operating system, in addition to three years of security updates. It is worth saying that competitors promise up to four Android updates.
price and availability
The Motorola Edge 40 hits Brazilian stores this Friday (19), with a suggested price of R$ 3,999. The green color is exclusive to the Motorola online store and physical Motostores. Black and Viva Magenta are available at retail.
